Great blog and review Dale. I have a question regarding bricking that you I'm hoping you can help me out with. I'm leaving the country for a while, to indonesia, and can't take my iPhone with me. I'm opting to just take my old cell and get a sim card when I arrive. If I wipe it (iPhone) clean and sell it, will the potential buyer be able to use it (on the same Rogers network) or is it essentially only usable by me?

Val, I don’t know what the theoretical battery life is. I know that I have to charge my iPhone every night … but I’m a heavy user of the iPhone for podcasts, SMS and email (among several other apps).

The few days where I’ve done nothing with it, it seemed to hold its charge well enough. I wouldn’t want to travel far without a recharger though and if you are using its GPS feature for in-car navigation, you’ll want a cigarette lighter recharger because the GPS REALLY sucks the battery life dry – really fast.

I’m REALLY hoping the 2.1 firmware upgrade due out this Friday will make the battery life better.

Without a doubt the iPhone, with its ability for the user to choose their mobile apps and especially with the carrier having very little to say what apps the user uses on the device is a game changer. The App Store is the number one reason I wanted an iPhone.

Integration with my existing iPod, music library, Apple TV and its support of fully synced iMap email were also very important.

The silivon valley / tech (web 2.0) crowd seems to be behind it big time.

I’ve not noticed the laptop change that you witnessed. Wherever I go most people seem to still be using non Apple laptops.

I went to a conference in Portland last month and I noticed 2 things:

1) –everyone- had a laptop for note taking at each session (not the case when I went to OpenWorld just a few years back). Well over half of all the laptops were Apple. I don’t know whether this conference just drew a different type of crowd or whether this is a true indication of a shift but either way it was quite remarkable.

2) iPhones were very popular. Seems nice to be a nice sized device for mobile web browsing.

Apple certainly left their impression. They must be doing something right and people seem willing to pay.

And now that I think of it, iPods were given away as some kind of door prize…
